Laura Wayman is an
accomplished keynote speaker, author, trainer, and a dedicated
Gerontologist. (A.A. degree in Gerontology, Social Services
Designee Certification) She has presented keynote speeches,
workshops, in-services, classes, trainings and seminars up and
down the west coast on the significant subject of Dementia Care.
Her audiences have often given her the highest evaluations,
singing her praises months and even years after her compassionate
presentations. Each presentation is a representation of how much
Ms. Wayman enjoys her work, she is confident with every
opportunity that she is “living her vision” of changing the caregiving
focus, one person, one family, one organization at a time. Ms.
Wayman grabs her audiences’ full attention in the first few
minutes, and holds it throughout, with interesting stories, humor
and relevant details that support and reinforce the message being
delivered. Her material will provide the opportunity for audience
members to feel a full range of emotion, from tears to laughter,
and comfortably relate to sometimes serious and disturbing
information, leaving with a new sense of confidence, purpose and
direction.
Prior to becoming a
full-time professional speaker, Ms. Wayman was a successful
entrepreneur. She built a senior care empire from the ground up,
relying on her deep understanding of the crushing responsibility a
family or professional caregiver faces in the demanding role of
providing dementia care to a loved one or client. In 2001, she
became the owner/operator of an innovative company, The Dementia
Whisperers, Inc., helping families and professionals deal with one
of the most horrific illnesses of our time.
In 2010, Ms. Wayman
was helped to realize her dream of reaching out to all 16 million
caregivers nationwide struggling with the day-to-day challenges of
caring for a loved one with dementia, when Johns Hopkins
University Press honored her by publishing her work in her book, A
Loving Approach to Dementia Care; Making Meaningful Connections
with the Person Who Has Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementia or
Memory Loss. This book is a compilation of lessons she has learned
while working with care providers and recipients, written in a
gentle and earnest manner, based on personal experiences, as well
as shared know-how from savvy care providers, and contains insight
to develop a customized care approach that offers the promise of
comfort and inspiration many desperate families and memory care
communities are crying out for.
Since 2001, Ms.
Wayman has spoken to over 500 audiences, many of them repeat
engagements. This includes key note presentations for various
international associations, The California Department of Aging
Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), the
California Long Term Care Ombudsman, breakout sessions for various
faith organizations, educational seminars, in-service trainings
for in-home care company staff, assisted living and memory care,
health care professional classes, instructor for a very popular
class every semester at a local community college, as well as
conducting countless one-on-one consultations and care coaching
courses for professional or family care givers.
Ms. Wayman is
considered a “dementia expert”, and a senior care community
leader. She has received numerous requests from local media to
provide educational support to media personalities, government
officials, various senior service provider’s executives/staff, and
inter-faith organization leaders, offering priceless knowledge and
advice proven to be advantageous for anyone who is suffering from
the emotional devastation that comes with caring for a loved one,
or client, with any form of dementia.
